Penalties and Interest

See how penalties and interest affect your late payments each month. They are required by state law and paying as soon as possible can help you save money.

Penalties and Interest

Texas requires property owners to pay penalty and interest for late property tax payments. The Tax Office cannot remove penalty and interest. It is added on the delinquency date each year, usually February 1.

How to calculate the penalty and interest that will be added to your late tax bill:

  • February: 6% penalty + 1% interest = 7% total added
  • March: 7% penalty + 2% interest = 9% total added
  • April: 8% penalty + 3% interest = 11% total added
  • May: 9% penalty + 4% interest = 13% total added
  • June: 10% penalty + 5% interest = 15% total added
  • July: 12% penalty + 6% interest = 18% total added
  • August: 12% penalty + 7% interest = 19% total added
  • September: 12% penalty + 8% interest = 20% total added
  • October: 12% penalty + 9% interest = 21% total added
  • November: 12% penalty + 10% interest = 22% total added
  • December: 12% penalty + 11% interest = 23% total added
  • January: 12% penalty + 12% interest = 24% total added

Interest continues to increase 1% per month until the taxes are paid in full.
